Experience

Matt holds a unique understanding of the enterprise, entrepreneurship  and start-up communities. He has significant experience in student engagement, policy analysis and debate, and campaign design. Key achievements:

  • Conceptualising and launching the Centre for Entrepreneurs think tank on behalf of founder and chairman Luke Johnson. Achieving wall-to-wall press coverage with the Centre’s first publication Migrant entrepreneurs: Building our businesses, creating our jobs’; acquiring national enterprise campaign StartUp Britain; publishing seven research papers in two years.
  • Co-founded NACUE – the National Association of College and University Entrepreneurs – and as policy director oversaw the growth of the charity from two volunteers into a team of paid staff within a three year period, expanding its support from 35 student enterprise societies to over 130 in universities & further education colleges across the UK.

  • Recognised within Government, HE sector and wider entrepreneurship community as a trusted, impartial advisor on all youth entrepreneurship discussions, feeding into round-tables hosted by the UK Government, the Royal Household, United Nations, G20 and World Economic Forum, and provided significant input into the Wilson Review and the QAA entrepreneurship education consultation.

  • Negotiated and secured funding from Government (BIS) for a multi-million pound, multi-year project for NACUE to extend the enterprise society model into every university and 160+ FE colleges in England. Designed entrepreneurship projects that have secured £100k funding from HEFCE, and built relations from scratch with Scottish & Welsh Governments and the Northern Ireland Executive.

  • Conceptualised, secured Government buy-in for, and launched the Startup Milkround campaign – aiding 20 enterprise societies deliver unique, tailored events under a national campaign brand to connect students with local SMEs and raise their aspirations to work in startups/small firms. Engaged 2000+ students over 20 events, with 120+ full time jobs created as a direct result.

  • Designed and launched the Lloyds Bank Enterprise Awards – Britain’s largest student & graduate entrepreneur competition, with 8 regional semi-finals across England, Wales and Scotland, and a £50k cash prize.  Taking the idea from concept stage, designed a full structure, internal proposal, implementation and marketing strategy, and recruiting a delivery team on behalf of Lloyds Banking Group.

  • Developed & delivered 50+ student training workshops; designed & managed high quality conferences and award dinners; wrote keynote speeches for CEOs; briefed & debriefed CEOs for policy debates and other engagements; wrote extensive guidance documents for enterprise societies; managed a national network of partners, among many other roles & responsibilities.

  • Flown out to Iraq in December 2012 by the United Nations Development Programme to train Iraqi Youth Parliamentarians on local youth engagement, government affairs work and the design and execution of national advocacy campaigns.
